Press release - 13 April 2022

From East to West Midlands – the 1000th house by Urban Splash milestone module is on route to Birmingham

13 April 2022

The modern housebuilder House by Urban Splash has created its 1,000th module at its housebuilding factory in Alfreton today – a milestone pod which is now on route to Port Loop in Birmingham where it will be craned into place as a completed home.

House by Urban Splash began creating its innovative new homes using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) in 2016. The process sees each storey of a home precision engineered before completing as a single module – often described as a modular pod.

Hundreds of specially trained operators work in the East Midlands factory, overseeing a slick production line to create each storey before they are then transported by road to create a House by Urban Splash home.

The process puts the Midlands at the heart of sustainable construction, with Town House offering a more energy efficient home thanks to lower embodied carbon that is around 60% less than traditional new build homes. Chris Shaw is delivery director at House by Urban Splash and explained: “This is a huge milestone for our growing business as we maintain our mission to keep creating well-designed homes using new construction techniques.

“It really is fitting that this milestone should be created for a home at Port Loop. The Midlands is at the heart of our story and home to our factory and hundreds of brilliant colleagues who are finding innovative new ways to create much needed homes. I feel proud to see this particular home make its journey from East to West.”

The 1,000th module will form part of the first ever Row House home at Port Loop, House by Urban Splash’s award-winning canalside community in Birmingham. Row House is the company’s take on the mews home, offering different layouts for customers. This will be the first time Row House will be available at Port Loop, with the typology also available at Wirral Waters. To date, all Town House homes at Port Loop have sold, and competed homes are now occupied.

The Row House homes form a new phase at Port Loop which has been supported by a multi-millionpound funding commitment from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and chair of the WMCA, said: “Port Loop is a great example of how our region is leading the way nationally – investing in new methods of construction which are bringing a redundant area back into use, creating much needed new homes.

“By building affordable low-carbon homes on sites like this not only are we helping to protect the green belt while creating new jobs and communities, we’re also helping to tackle the region’s climate emergency as part of our #WM2041 plans.”

Chris Shaw added: “Following the success of our Town House homes at Port Loop – where all completed homes are now sold – we are diversifying the offering for buyers in the Midlands with Row House, and look forward to welcoming more new customers into these homes in the coming months.”

Prices for Row House start from just £310,000, with House by Urban Splash offering first time buyers in Birmingham access to a new 5% deposit scheme exclusive to Port Loop. Under the initiative, the 10% deposit needed to exchange contracts and secure a new home at Port Loop is split into two payments. Purchasers pay just the first 5% on exchange, with the final 5% paid up-to six months after the reservation date.

House by Urban Splash has won 28 awards for its innovation and commitment to creating homes using MMC. All of the company’s properties are designed by Liverpool-based architects shedkm; to find out more about the homes visit: https://www.housebyurbansplash.co.uk/about.
