How to create a more calming and peaceful bedroom

08 April 2022

Our interior designer, Rachel Thomas, is back to share her expert advice – this time on creating a relaxing bedroom space that you’ll never want to leave

To-do lists seem to be never ending and our home and work commitments seem to grow by the day.

So, it’s important to create a space where you can close the door on the world, get away from it all, and enjoy uninterrupted peace, quiet, and serenity whenever you need it.

The bedroom is, of course, the best place to unwind in – so to help you make your space as relaxing as possible, I’m sharing six of my favourite top tips.

Our homes are designed with plenty of room for storage, to help you keep your space neat and tidy

01 –– Declutter

Try and keep your room minimal and tidy – your bedroom isn’t for clutter.

Choose a bedside table with drawers so that you can keep your belongings neatly tidied away and out of sight.

If you don’t have the luxury of space, look for clever storage solutions such as storage boxes and baskets to keep under the bed.

They’re a great, low maintenance option to help you keep things tidy with ease.

02 –– Think about colours and textures

Your bedroom colour scheme should be personal – you don’t need to follow the latest Instagram trends.

But whether you go for intense dark colours to mimic the night, or softer neutral tones to help you feel zen – think about adding a bit of texture too.

Incorporating texture and layering into your bedroom space will increase the comfort levels and will help you to unwind.

Adding cushions and throws in different fabrics is a great way to do this.

Go for warm lighting rather than cool lighting

03 –– Turn down the lights

Turn off the big light to give your space a more intimate feel.

Use softer accent lighting in your bedroom and go for a warm light bulb rather than a cool one.

Make your bedroom a phone-free zone

04 –– Consider creating a technology-free zone

Limit your use of electronic devices in your bedroom.

We all know blue light is for bad for sleep, so charge your phones elsewhere in the house and buy yourself and old school alarm clock!

As your TV counts as blue light too, consider not having one in the bedroom at all and only keep one in the living room.

Add lavender or bergamot scents to your room to help you feel more relaxed

05 –– Accessorise with scent

The bedroom is a great place to accessorise with scent, candles or diffusers.

Experiment with your favourite, calming fragrances.

For example, lavender or bergamot are perfect for the bedroom because they help you to feel sleepy and relaxed.

Add a bit of green to your bedroom with a leafy plant

06 –– Don’t forget the plants

If you haven’t already, think about adding plants to your bedroom.

Species like peace lilies and spider plants not only look great, because they help to clean the air.
