How to enjoy a great a weekend in and around East Float at Wirral Waters

17 February 2022
A 4 minute read by Becky Whitehead

The 15-minute city concept’s been debated a lot this year, especially during the pandemic. The idea is that everything you need should be a 15-minute walk or cycle from your home – be it a place to work, play, a school, green space.

One place that’s fast becoming a reality is Wirral Waters, a brand-new area for Merseyside which is being developed by Peel L&P. I’m native to the Wirral and it’s obvious to see how much the development is revitalising are local area.

One of the first neighbourhoods progressing here is Northbank, at the heart of which are the House by Urban Splash homes at East Float. This is an incredibly exciting new quarter for the area, with brilliantly-designed homes (created by House by Urban Splash using MMC), a new pocket park – and it’s all overlooking the water.

And now, as the first residents move in here and experience life in this beautiful part of Merseyside, I’m sharing my top tips on the best things to do in and around this emerging neighbourhood.

Birkenhead Park

How to spend a Saturday.

9am: bikes and brunch

Start the day right with a 10-minute cycle along the waterfront – one that will lead you to Birkenhead Park. It’s here that I love to visit the popular Caffe Cream at the visitor’s centre – perfect for a catch-up coffee and brunch with friends – or to enjoy one of their delicious ice-creams. You can then walk off your treat by taking a leisurely stroll around the lake; I always stop off for a tranquil moment at the beautiful boathouse

Midday: brunch

If you don’t fill yourself up at Caffe Cream, head out to Joro Vegan Eatery just a few minutes’ away from East Float on foot; there you’ll find a delicious array of vegan treats.

Williamson Art Gallery

2pm: culture

Take in some Saturday afternoon culture at the Williamson Art Gallery – a mere 14-minute cycle from East Float. This incredible institution is almost 100 years old and features masterpieces, ceramics, and sculptures. It is also home to the largest public collection of Della Robbia pottery in the UK and to some internationally important paintings

8pm: dining

For a vibrant Saturday night, head to nearby Oxton Village – just 8 minutes away by taxi. There are loads of great places to eat including the Oxton Bar and Kitchen for cocktails and live music, Sabrosa for tapas, small plates bistro Thyme – for or for a super special occasion head to the Michelin-starred Fraiche.

Wirral beaches are just a short walk away

How to spend a Sunday.

10am: clear your head

Work off the indulgences of the night before with a bike ride to Bidston Moss – just 15 minutes from East Float or take a stroll out to any of the Wirral’s eight – yes EIGHT – beaches all of which are just a short walk away.

Afternoon

Head to Woodside Ferry Village and grab local produce, artworks and food that ranges from Portuguese to Japanese!

Woodside Ferry Village

And all this is just the tip of the iceberg; there’s so much more around the Wirral, not to mention loads of new restaurants, cafes, and other amenities planned as part of our designs for Wirral Waters. It really is an awesome place to live, work and play.
