“Off the peg didn't work for us”

    29 June 2020
A 3 minute read by Katie Kershaw - Homeowner, Port Loop

Katie Kershaw designed her dream, canalside home with House by Urban Splash last year; she and her husband Paul now live in a completely bespoke property at the Urban Splash Port Loop neighbourhood in Birmingham – an island neighbourhood being created with the company’s partners Places for People.

"When you work in urban design and housing, you’ve got your eye on this kind of thing.

“Having visited New Islington, I was a bit of a House by Urban Splash fan and really hoped that I’d be able to move into one of their houses one day – something which became a reality when the first phase was launched for sale at Port Loop.

“We were maybe a little too eager on the launch day, turning up three hours early just to make sure that we got the house we wanted; and that’s when the fun began, working alongside the House by Urban Splash team to design our perfect home.

“For us, configuring our own space was a chance to reinvent the way we live. Our old house had so much wasted space, but being able to configure this house gave us time to think about how it would work around our lives. This is a house to be lived in.

"Rather than have three bedrooms, we opted for one bedroom and a living room upstairs; the upper floor is our space to relax, whereas downstairs is our day to day space so we opted for an open plan design that incorporates a kitchen, living area and an area to work, together with a separate room for our turbo trainers and gym equipment as we are keen cyclists. Modular homes give you this flexibility to totally live how you like.

“The bespoke layout of our home has of course been even more of a benefit during lockdown, working and living here has been a godsend thanks to some foresight in our designs which afforded us carefully planned workspaces and separate living areas which allow us to shut off. The house also features oversized windows and high ceilings – meaning it’s light and airy, something which hugely benefitted us with all of these recent weeks indoors.

“Since we bought, the House by Urban Splash customer journey has evolved even further, and now customers have this new tool to use online. We played with the old configurator, but what’s here now is even more revolutionary and it’s great to see House by Urban Splash encouraging people to think about their house as a customisable space rather than a defined set of rooms with prescribed uses – an industry norm which has shackled so many buyers for far too long.

“Off the peg didn't work for us, and it doesn't work for lots of people; I hope they use this revolutionary new opportunity to create their dream home and create a bespoke space for them. We couldn't be happier.”
