Seven places to cycle to from East Float, Wirral Waters

10 May 2022
A 5 minute read by Megan Howey

From Birkenhead Park to Wallasey Beach, here some of the best spots to cycle to from this brand-new, waterside neighbourhood

Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a beginner, there are so many reasons to get on your bike at East Float, Wirral Waters.

Wirral Waters’ Action Plan for Active Travel will see the neighbourhood become the most cyclist and pedestrian friendly development in the UK.

As part of this green, low carbon plan, a high-quality cycling network will be introduced – featuring lighting to improve the sense of safety.

So, you’ll be able to explore your new neighbourhood and its surrounding areas by bike with confidence and ease.

To help you plan your first few rides, we’ve rounded up seven of the best places to cycle to within 3.5 miles of East Float.

Birkenhead Park

01 — Birkenhead Park
Park Drive, Birkenhead, CH41 4HY – 1.4 miles away (8 mins)

Head over to Birkenhead Park and discover its bridges, boat house, and beautiful, green woodlands.

The park – also known as the ‘People’s Garden’ – has been an important landmark in the area for almost two centuries.

Bring the whole family and cycle through nearly 140 acres of historic parkland, pause lakeside for a picnic, or enjoy a bite to eat at the popular Caffe Cream.

At Birkenhead Park, you can also join in with inclusive weekly cycling event, Wheels For All.

Woodside Ferry Village

02 — Woodside Ferry Village
Woodside Ferry Terminal, Birkenhead, CH41 6DU – 1.3 miles away (7 minutes)

One for local foodies, Woodside Ferry Village is definitely a spot you’ll be returning to.

This poplar, waterside food hall set in the Woodside Ferry Terminal, features a number of interesting, independent eateries.

Stop by on your bike and enjoy a well-deserved refreshment break with views across the River Mersey and Liverpool’s iconic cityscape.

03 — Bidston Moss
Bidston Moss Park, Wallasey, CH44 2ET – 2.3 miles away (12 mins)

Beautifully transformed Bidston Moss features a newly renovated fishing lake with recycled boardwalks and fishing pegs.

It’s a great spot for cyclists who love observing nature and wildlife as its home to a wide range of flora and fauna, and buzzards are often spotted in the area.

There’s plenty of new and long-established cycle routes to enjoy with family and friend and – if you’re up to it – you can even have a go at more unusual sports including Nordic skiing.

Bidston Hill

04 — Bidston Hill
Boundary Road, Bidston, Wirral, CH43 7PD – 2.2 miles away (14 mins)

With its rocky terrain, Bidston Hill is a great spot for adventurous mountain rides.

At its peak, it’s 231 ft high – making it one of the highest vantage points of Wirral with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding areas – including the 16th century Grade II listed windmill, Bidston Observatory and Lighthouse.

The Bidston Hill trail explores around 100 acres of heathland and woodland and you’ll find ancient rock carvings along the way.

Wallasey Beach

05 — Wallasey Beach
Coastal Drive, Wallasey, Merseyside, CH45 3PZ – 3.4 miles away (25 mins)

Recommended by the Marine Conservation Society, Wallasey Beach is an unmissable beauty spot enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

It’s on the eastern end of the North Wirral Coastal Park, made up of a wide stretch of golden, sandy beach.

You’ll see plenty of water sport activity here – including wind and kite surfing – and you’ll also find a sheltered area of short grassland perfect for picnics away from the breeze and sand.

06 — Vale Park
New Brighton, Wallasey, CH45 – 2.7 miles away (15 mins)

Enjoy a beautiful 15-minute cycle to Vale Park right along the waterfront from East Float.

This historic, Victorian park, located in New Brighton, features landscaped gardens – including a rose garden and a fairy garden – a bandstand, a children’s play area, a café, annual bedding displays, open grass areas, a kick-about pitch, and outdoor fitness equipment.

During the summer months, Vale Park is a great place to visit to enjoy weekly brass brand concerts too.

Thyme Oxton Restaurant

07 — Thyme Oxton Restaurant
17 Rose Mount, Birkenhead, CH43 5SG – 2.6 miles (17 minutes)

Cycle through Birkenhead Park until you reach Thyme Oxton.

This is your new local bistro set right in the heart of Oxton where you’ll be spoiled for choice with modern plates of British classics with a French twist, all made with locally-sourced, fresh produce.

Once you’ve finished your meal, head back through the park and relax for a little while before you head back home
