So, providing you tick the boxes and you can say, ‘yes, the doors are 900mm wide’ or, ‘yes, that bedroom is so many square metres’ – you can build a house.

But none of these rules and regulations cover the qualitative aspects of what it’s really like to live in a home.

It doesn’t say anywhere that there’s an emphasis on natural light or ceiling height – or any of those things.

And because of this, it’s common to find new build homes with quite small windows and low ceilings.

For me, ‘good design’ is about understanding how we can improve our homes for people’s real life experiences.

It’s about putting people first. It’s about thinking beyond the four walls of a home and looking at how the home is situated.

What’s its relationship with the other houses? Does it encourage community? Is it in a location where your children have a safe space to run and play right on your doorstep?

We have to think about how people live, and what they really expect from their homes and neighbourhoods. And we have to do our best to design real places to live that meet – that exceed – these expectations.

And that’s what we aim to do.
