What does it really mean to 'live well by design’ in a House by Urban Splash home?

11 March 2022

Live well by design’ is our manifesto, it’s our promise to the people who live in our homes and neighbourhoods – but what exactly does it mean and how does ‘good design’ shape the way we live?

When it comes to ‘good design’, we intuitively know what feels good and what doesn’t.

We know that walking into a room with high ceilings, big windows, and lots of natural light makes us feel happier, just as we know cramped, dark rooms have the opposite effect.

When building a house, there are a lot of regulations and codes of practice you have to follow.

You’ve got to meet specific metric performances – and the whole all of this process is quantitative.

All House by Urban Splash homes come with high ceilings, big windows, and lots of natural light

So, providing you tick the boxes and you can say, ‘yes, the doors are 900mm wide’ or, ‘yes, that bedroom is so many square metres’ – you can build a house.

But none of these rules and regulations cover the qualitative aspects of what it’s really like to live in a home.

It doesn’t say anywhere that there’s an emphasis on natural light or ceiling height – or any of those things.

And because of this, it’s common to find new build homes with quite small windows and low ceilings.

Homes designed around how you want to live

For me, ‘good design’ is about understanding how we can improve our homes for people’s real life experiences.

It’s about putting people first. It’s about thinking beyond the four walls of a home and looking at how the home is situated.

What’s its relationship with the other houses? Does it encourage community? Is it in a location where your children have a safe space to run and play right on your doorstep?

We have to think about how people live, and what they really expect from their homes and neighbourhoods. And we have to do our best to design real places to live that meet – that exceed – these expectations.

And that’s what we aim to do.

We think about how people live, and what they really expect from their homes and neighbourhoods

We want people to live well in a home that places an emphasis on nature, on healthy living and well-being, and on real community.

And we encourage this type of lifestyle through our bold, creative, and interesting design solutions that set us apart from other housebuilders in the UK.

And it’s all of this collectively, that illustrates what we really mean when we say we want our homeowners to live well by design in a home and neighbourhood created to put people first.
