What we wish more people knew about modular homes

11 March 2022

Here are two key points to think about if you’re considering making the move to modular

Within the UK context, there’s a challenge around the concept of modular architecture and design.

Familiar phrases like ‘bricks and mortar’ suggest stability and tradition – leaving many suspicious of exactly how reliable modern technologies and modular design are when it comes to building new homes.

At House by Urban Splash, all of our homes are modular – they’re modern, they’re built off-site in our factory in Alfreton using modern methods of construction, and they’re carefully delivered to our neighbourhoods, module by module (or storey by storey).

But, although modular homes have been around for decades in the UK, the concept can still seem alien to many Brits looking for their brand-new home.

We caught up with founder and creative director of Urban Splash Group Ltd, Jonathan Falkingham MBE, to ask what he wishes more people knew about modular homes in the UK.

Here are Jonathan’s two key points to think about if you’re considering making the move to modular.

Modern, modular homes, built off site in our very own factory

01 — Modular homes are successful across the world

“Our partners in Japan, Sekisui House, the largest and most sustainable homebuilder in the world, has only ever built modular houses – and they’ve been going for 60 years,” Jonathan said.

“They’re seen to be the highest quality homes you can buy with a great reputation.

“And it’s the same with many other countries across Europe as well.

“There’s a lot of prefabrication across Europe, so I think we’ve got a really unique issue in Britain about tackling the perception that modular design and prefab isn’t as good as traditional – but it is, it's even better.”

Creating better quality homes with better standards

02 — You get quality and precision that traditional builds could never give you

“I think what I’d like people to understand over time is that with prefabrication and modular design you get better quality homes with better building standards, full stop,” Jonathan said.

“If you’re buying a brand new car, you wouldn’t want to see it being built in a field, in the rain, with workers eating fish and chips in the passenger’s seat while it’s being built.

“With our homes you get the reassurance that they’re being built inside our clean, dry factory, with meticulous precision, in a controlled environment.”

Find your brand-new House by Urban Splash home at East Float, Wirral Waters, Birkenhead, or at Port Loop, Birmingham.
