Future Lab is an independent space for House by Urban Splash to look beyond immediate horizons and existing goals, at the future of homes and neighbourhoods, and the ways in which we can all 'Live well by design®'.
Future Lab explores the ways in which we may want, and need, to live in a future we don’t yet know is coming.
Global grand challenges
Future Lab runs a collaborative programme working with academics, engineers, designers and policymakers to address the global grand challenges and their impacts on people and the planet, supporting progress towards a more sustainable and equitable future. The scale of the challenges mean that reactive innovation is not enough, Future Lab aim to actively shape the future not just mitigate the impacts of the way we live now.
Global, national and local populations are changing, aging and shifting. The challenges are complex, some communities and populations are in decline against a backdrop of unsustainable global population growth. Shifts in social attitudes, work patterns and ‘family’ norms mean the housing sector’s stock responses offer no new solutions for people’s changing circumstances and life choices. Our aim is to address this shortfall through new knowledge, better understanding and applied innovation.
Carbon is the critical issue facing the planet and radical solutions are urgently needed. Through necessity we are on the edge of revolutionary change and with this change also comes real opportunity. Carbon reduction is an essential end in itself but in our response we must also steer towards a more equitable future which aligns long-term stewardship of the planet with the well-being of future generations.
Future technology will continue to blur the lines between physical, digital and biological worlds, presenting exciting opportunities to change the way we work, interact with each other and live our lives. But solutions to our challenges will be both high tech and low tech, and Future Lab will not pursue any technology for its own sake or for the interests of a few. Our definition of progress will be measured in improvements for both people and the planet, measured in social value and environmental resilience.
Future Lab explores the way we want to live both now and in an unknown future. We pursue long term goals and develop transformative ideas, technologies and applications, working with others so that through collective endeavour we can help steer this unknown future towards a better future for all.
Collaborators, partners & punks
Future Lab works with partners and collaborators from academia, the government and industry to explore how environmental, social and technological changes may impact the way we live in the future. We undertake ambitious research projects which aim to produce new knowledge, solutions and opportunities to transform the way we design, build and live in healthy happy and sustainable homes and communities.
